Report on the Gig at the Brunswick Festival!
Well what an interesting crowd that was at this outdoor gig, I think the only word is ECLECTIC! I saw plenty of middle aged lesbians, punks, bike riders and the odd person in jeans and a tee shirt. I saw a bearded lady, oh yeah a bearded lady, full on, I actually pointed her out to another fan and he couldn’t believe his eyes either.
The long awaited performance by ROOT! For 2008 started at about 3.20pm on the main stage on Sydney Road (the end closest to the city) and went till about 4.30pm.
The gig saw the return of the banjo player and more importantly saw the debut performance of the newest member of the band Dougie Lee Root!
Yep new member Dougie Lee played the guitar and backing vocals and all the hard core fans agreed he was a great addition to the band. I did manage to catch up with him at the end of the gig and got a quick autograph but our words were fleeting, I look forward to having a chat/beer with him at the next gig. Dougie was backing vocals on the album "Root! Supposed He Was Out Of The Question".
I didn’t get a set list but they played the usual set with the addition of a new song Uncle Vom Vom. Which was a beautiful written song about going the chunder. Lyrics similar to "You don’t like him coming along but your glad when he has been, some things are better out than in." Great lyrics and a fun song that the crowd got into.
The crowd being mostly new to ROOT! Got right into it. It really was great to see a whole new set of people laugh at the appropriate spots of the comedy of ROOT! And it looked as though they liked it as it seemed the CD’S were going like hot cakes at the end of the gig.
It was great weather too and it was very funny for DC to be diatribing about the sun coming out and as he said that the sun came out from behind a cloud.
There were plenty of kids there, I even took my 6yo. We spent ages planning the outfit and then I spent some time on his LOL!
Henri’s kids were there and even got up on stage at one point and had a bit of a dance. Hey I think another band had a song about that LOL.
I think without a doubt the best thing was playing to the new crowd and hearing those laughs, the best was the Danni from Dan Murphy’s. Unfortunately DC did the usual walk into the crowd and the plug came out from the mic (stick to the cordless mate) and the diatribe flow was cut. It was fixed quickly and he carried on and more laughter ensued but the timing was cut a bit.
Sound quality was quite good considering it was an outside gig, although the band told me it was quite loud to them and as such they couldn’t really gauge the reaction from the crowd, but don’t worry I think ROOT! Picked up some more fans today.
I look forward to the next gig.
