The ROOT! Compendium - Old news - August, 2008

August 31, 2008

Last night, ROOT! performed their first ever interstate gig at The Vanguard in Sydney. The ROOT! Compendium is calling out for anyone with setlists, photographs, reviews, recounts, audio or visual recordings. If you have any (or all) of these things, please contact The ROOT! Compendium.

Update: Recently, keen eyed ROOT!ophiles have noticed the debut album, Root Supposed He Was Out Of The Question is available on digital music store iTunes (clicky).

In response to DC speaking on Triple J radio yesterday morning, some listeners have wondered when ROOT! will again grace Melbourne ears with their music. Well, there are three confirmed upcoming gigs, the first in Sydney and the next two in Brisbane. However, late unconfirmed gigs are set for September or October.

And the ROOT! Mailing List can be found at rootinfo@bigpond.com

Update: The Triple J radio interview with DC Root can be found here via the Triple J website (direct link) and is also available to stream on the ROOT! MySpace page. Engorge.

Last night, ROOT! took the stage at the Evelyn Hotel for a sweltering set of fifteen tracks in total (their longest set to date) and even debuted a brand new song, known as "Orange" by its setlist title. The launch of their single Get Up Yourself went well, with copies literally being carried out the door after being properly paid for.

The band were in top form with every member at some point having a moment to shine as DC wandered through the crowd, on tables and on the floor at different times (obviously). DC took a moment to sit on the edge of the stage where his hat was quickly taken - and worn - by a fan. That fan received a punch in the face (in my imagination) and a stern talking to, as the song continued, by DC.

As for the single, it does indeed feature four tracks and those, in order, are so arranged:

1. Get Up Yourself

2. DC Root's Failure

3. I Wear My Prescription Sunglasses At Night

4. Get Up Yourself Part 2

For those attending any of the upcoming ROOT! concerts during their three-show launch of Get Up Yourself, you can expect to pay $10 for a copy of the single.

Well, two days ago DC and Henri found themselves on RRR Radio where they talked, sung and promo'd their way though seventeen minutes of must-hear radio. The new songs played were Joe Bloggs Blogs (an assumed title) and Thank God You're Here. The second of which we have heard before, however it took the form of a spoken track, not a stand-alone song. Also a promo track for the upcoming Evelyn hotel gig was played, very good.

Like the generation defining "War of the Worlds" broadcast, I'm sure this will become a watershed moment for our generation. The whole event can be downloaded here (17MB).

On another note, Barnaby's drum kit has been re-listed on auction site eBay (click here for the auction) at a reduced opening price. This is a chance to own a piece of music memorabilia. Even if you don't play drums, you could donate it to The ROOT! Compendium. The kit has been played live at many ROOT! gigs and appears on several of their tracks, including some which haven't even been released yet.

More information and pics (courtesy of Barnaby via eBay) of the auction. Click each image for a larger version.

The drums in question have been used in ROOT! for eight months. For the connoisseur, from Barnaby himself: "The tracks this kit appears on include two tracks from the upcoming EP (which I can only disclose after 23rd Aug), plus one from the next album, which we are already recording. It has been played at ROOT! gigs at The Old Bar, Spanish Club, and The East Brunswick Club."

Not only are we blessed with a new track (Introducing Get Up Yourself), a recent article, an upcoming single and gigs just around the bend, now we get this:

Just spotted is an online auction for the hardest of hardcore ROOT! fans, Barnaby Root's own drumkit on eBay.com - seriously.

Features: 100% Birch - Hand built in the UK - Specially imported - Rare sizes - Model unavailable in Australia

Hit the link for more information. I want this so bad I'd wrestle a mountain gorilla for the chance. The starting price is one and three quarter grand. Did I mention free shipping anywhere in Australia? The one downside is the ROOT! logo off the front isn't included in the whole deal, but seriously, when you're behind Barnaby's drum kit, the ladies are only going to be looking at you.

The auction finishes tomorrow afternoon. Here's the link again (clicky) and good luck!

Update:

ROOT! Get Up Yourself cover

Mentioned above is free shipping for Barnaby's drumkit, should you win it, to anywhere in Australia. This is false: free shipping is, in fact, to the Melbourne Metro area only. Should you live outside the area, shipping/collecting the kit is up to you.

And lookey left a bit, no a bit further left, it's the cover for the ROOT! single Get Up Yourself - its here! Featuring Root the cowboy in an hilarious pun-related situation. It also features a log which appears to be circular at one end, but triangular at the other. Intriguing.

Click the image for a much larger view and puzzle over possible solutions to Root's predicament. I've already figured at least one solution. Have you?

The CD held within the packaging is set to feature four tracks, most possibly these: Introducing Get Up Yourself, Get Up Yourself, I Wear My Prescription Sunglasses At Night, DC Root's Failure. We'll be seeing for sure in a week's time. Here's what ROOT! have written:

IT'S TIME TO GET UP YOURSELF!

Don't miss out - get your tickets now for ROOT! 's 3 city nano-tour to celebrate the launch of the new single "Get Up Yourself"

The venues are cosy... the tickets will be limited...dates are as follows:

"Get Up Yourself" will be available at the shows, and subsequently online here and through the band's site at CD Baby. The single will feature three bonus tracks.

ROOT! Moonee Valley article

With less than a week to go before ROOT! hit the stage for the first leg of their "Get Up Yourself" single launch, ROOT! have launched a track on their MySpace called... "Introducing Get Up Yourself" - The spoken word track discusses the titular track and DC himself in equally flippant and shallow measures. It also features some sections of what we can expect the studio version of "Get Up Yourself" to sound like. This seems to be a strong contender for track one of the actual single itself.

ROOT! will be appearing on RRR radio in Melbourne this Sunday, 17th August, 2008. It's said to begin at 4pm, but we expect somewhere around half-past three. Tune in for: "DC Root and Henri Root will be appearing live to air this Sunday August 17th at 4pm on Triple R's "JVG Method" - 102.7 FM. They will be playing one or two completely unreleased songs in a slightly shambolic, unrehearsed manner, plus previewing the new "Get Up Yourself" single."

ROOT! were also spotted in a recent Moonee Valley Community News (to the left, click for bigger) by an eagle-eyed observer. Thanks for the tip! It includes some quotes from DC, such as: "[Henri] wasn't doing much with his talent so we decided we might try and write a few songs. We didn't even have a band in mind when that happened but after about a year's work we decided we might try being a band."

Root Supposed He Was Out Of The Question has been out of the boys hands for more than half a year now and has made it to several interesting places. A Wikipedia article has sprung up for the album (clicky) to accompany the one on the band (clicky). The album is also available outside the RegisterNow link on their MySpace at online site CDBaby (clicky). For slightly more you can get it fully signed as a RareRecord (clicky) and for even more you can buy it off a complete stranger (presumably unsigned) via Amazon (clicky).
