Last night ROOT! played the East Brunswick Club to a very receptive crowd. After some confusion about the times, ROOT! took center stage a mere two hours later than expected. According to Doug Lee Root they were headed to a "rock set" tonight and catching a glimpse of Kerri Simpson rehearsing Crown with DC before the gig promised excellent things to come.
As promised, the band started out with a brand new track called Get Up, which started things off nicely. As per norm, DC quickly took off into the crowd with his cordless mic. Soon enough he was interviewing various female members of the audience. A stunned Rachael (apologies if the spelling is wrong) politely asked if DC would accost someone else. He never did find out if "his bum looked big in this".
Jessica, lucky winner of the ROOT! hamper
DC obliged however and found his way down the back and onto tables, with Henri following on cordless guitar. Finding another female, he told her about what its like to be a terribly depressed writer and how easy it is. Finding their way back to the stage and the rest of the band returning, it wasn't long before the set was interrupted once again to draw the hamper. It went to a fairly suprised young girl named Jessica, who prefers to be called Jess because she "got in trouble for saying Jessica on stage". The hamper was nearly as big as her and apparently was so heavy she made someone else carry it for her.
A few songs later and the set was complete. Walking off stage, then almost instantly back on, ROOT! played an encore of Crown with additional vocals by Kerri Simpson and Sarah Carroll, which fleshed out the song nicely.
The new look ROOT! "comfort zone" t-shirt was on for sale at the sum of $35. It features a graphic on the front of Root the cowboy at a set of turntables, out of his comfort zone. The reverse of the shirt contains a lengthy digression about the phrase and what it means, mostly fleshing out concepts already present in the longer versions of Back To Mine.

It's the ROOT! Hamper!
Is that the new look ROOT! t-shirt up the front, there?

It is exactly one week until ROOT! play at the East Brunswick Club, and here's what we know so far: There is a swank poster, possibly three new songs plus the recently debuted Uncle Vom Vom, a new design t-shirt and not to mention ROOT! headlining next to Kerri Simpson. Will new bassist Doug Lee Root appear? What about Joe Root, slide guitar and all things twangy extrodinairre? Most likely one or both.
But if that's not enough, here is more (and I can't say it any better than the press release does):
PRE-PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS TO SEE: ROOT! AT THE EAST BRUNSWICK CLUB AND GO INTO THE ROOT! HAMPER RAFFLE!
HERE’S WHAT YOU COULD WIN IN THE ROOT! HAMPER:

• An original framed ROOT! cartoon
• The brand-new, hot-off-the-press ROOT! "Comfort Zone" t shirt
• A cowboy hat as worn by ROOT!
• CDs by ROOT! and Kerri Simpson
And the raffle will be drawn by DC Root onstage!
Bet you don’t get that at a DJ Shadow gig...
To be in it to consume it, you MUST pre-purchase your tickets from The East Box Office, on 9388 9794 or online at www.eastbrunswickclub.com
And because we understand that purveyors of consciousness-heightening music like ROOT! will, by definition, love the finer things in life, we recommend you contact Anthony Sharpe of "Victoria's Fine Wine Merchant" on 0438 387938, mention ROOT!, and discuss one of his special $95 a dozen wine deals!)
Regular programming will resume after that commercial break.

If you haven't had the chance to see the ROOT! and Kerri Simpson poster (as drawn by DC Root) for the March 20th gig at East Brunswick Club, here it is (more news after the break):
Click it and the full sized version is (warning!) 1.32MB - this is a full sized poster suitable for printing out and gluing onto buildings. Not that the ROOT! Compendium condones that sort of thing without prior council approval, but, you know...
Anyways, at the most recent gig a brand new song was debuted called Uncle Vom Vom. The lyrics page isn't up yet as that whole section is currently in need of medical aid. There are at least three more songs currently unaired which are undergoing rehearsals and may make an appearance at the East Brunswick Club show (see giant poster above for details).
Speaking of the East Brunswick Club show, a new design shirt will be available there, presumably at the same cost as previous shirts. And finally there are two sets of photos from the most recent gig (Brunswick Festival) available here and here.
