The ROOT! Compendium - Old news - March, 2009
March 23, 2009
ROOT! explained.
“Being D.C. Root, the singer, rantwriter and leader of new Melbourne group Root! would be an exhausting life. I don’t know how many original, articulate and social based thoughts you would have each day. I think maybe two. Is that close? I’m talking about fully mapped out social theories; not just what pisses you off on tele or in the paper or at work, but a complete guide as to why it pisses you off, how that piss-off fits into the grand scheme of piss-offs, and all explained in supremely colourful language. Maybe it’s closer to two a year.
D.C. Root has one a second.”
Rave Magazine, Brisbane
“ROOT! are awesome. Putting it simply. DC’s lyricism is a prime factor in the band’s growing popularity. The man is the sharpest wordsmith in Australia.”
www.thedwarf.com.au
“DC Root’s turn of phrase makes Oscar Wilde sound as exciting as the phone book”
Beat Magazine, Melbourne
Who is ROOT!?
DC Root is this country’s most original, articulate, angry, funny singer/songwriter/spoken word artist. His band contains two former members of Ice Cream Hands, a German-born movie soundtrack composer and a keyboard prodigy who has played with the likes of Eric Burdon and Crowded House. And there’s DC’s past, which he does not discuss. ROOT! is unlike any of these artists.
What is ROOT!?
“Garage punk poets.” That’s how they are introduced on their forthcoming appearance on Spicks and Specks.
ROOT! is a raucous, melodic, hard-rocking bar band with lyrics that defy categorisation – by turns fun, savage, cerebral and allusive or drenched in dry colloquial coarseness.
Why is ROOT!?
ROOT! appear onstage in cowboy hats - but they are not a country band. ROOT! shows include spontaneous, rambling, funny monologues and moments of unexpected performance art - but they are not a comedy act. ROOT! is not nostalgia, novelty, pisstake or parody. ROOT! has a growing cult following nationally, based on the fact that, unlike most press releases, all of this is true.
Where is ROOT!?
ROOT! is currently finishing their new album, scheduled for release in July. It is a 16 track song cycle called “Surface Paradise” which DC Root describes as “bombastic, romantic misanthropy. Like an unknown, uglier brother of Bono.”
ROOT!’s appearance on Spicks and Specks is scheduled for June 24.
ROOT! are playing a limited series of live dates before returning to recording. They will appear Saturday May 2nd at the Northcote Social Club.
